Dorothy was born two days after Christmas in 1920 to Mark and Nellie Schieffelin who lived on So. Broad St. She had one older sister, Marie. Her mother was Nellie and her father, an electrician, was Mark.
As a little girl she would have played in the backyard and under the house. The house was at least three feet above ground on brick piers so a young child could easily walk around underneath it.
When she was almost 2 years old Nellie had George and Marie and Dorothy had a little brother. She went to Russel Elementary for 6-years. Russell was within walking distance north of their house on Broad St.
